Shoeburyness to Leigh on Sea

Come with me, on an enjoyable walk from Shoeburyness to Leigh on sea, walking along the picturesque coastal path.

We will meet at Shoeburyness Station at 11.45 am and will walk the short distance to the seafront, where there are toilets and a refreshment stand selling tea, coffee and snacks.

After our short stop, we will follow the coastal path which runs along the Thames estuary to Leigh on Sea, passing through the former British Army camp and firing ranges of Shoeburyness (now transformed into housing and parkland) to the pretty seafront town of Thorpe Bay, with its many colourful beach huts. Here we will pause to eat our lunch, where we can picnic (please bring packed lunch) by the beach, or use one of the seafront cafes.

We will then continue along the seafront, passing Southend on Sea and its iconic pier until we arrive at the picturesque seaside town of Leigh on Sea, where our walk finishes.

There is an excellent fish and chip shop here and also pubs and restaurants with a range of food. Leigh on Sea station is nearby for return trains to London Fenchurch Street.

The Peterboat Inn in Leigh on Sea is highly recommended for its food and has indoor and outdoor seating overlooking the waterfront,
Total walking distance around 7 miles.

Anybody wishing to leave the walk early can catch trains back to London from Southend on Sea Central or Chalkwell stations, both of which are close to the coastal path.

It is recommended you get the 10.34 c2c train from Fenchurch Street which arrives at Shoeburyness at approx 11.38am, calling at Limehouse, West Ham, Barking and Upminster for connections with the DLR and tube.

Purchase return ticket to Shoeburyness. For those with the London over 60 oyster card , you need only book a return from Upminster.

If you are 65 and over you can purchase for £7 a C2C day rover and you can get this ticket at any C2C railway station

If you have a knee problem or walk slow this walk is not for you.
